Drumming to a different beat

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I usually don’t listen to NME. I find the magazine to be flawed in the way it promotes new bands. It goes more on the basis of image than actual musical ability. See The Twang, The Vines and throw into the mix The Thrills. All bands hailed by NME as the next big thing, all failed miserably.

The Temper Trap

I love this band!

Just found out about them via the Tom Morton show on BBC Radio Scotand (The guy plays some decent tunes) Anyway they hail from Mebourne in Australia and they released their debut album last year to some critical acclaim.

Spiritualized

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Sun so bright that I’m nearly blind
Fool as I’m working it out in my mind
Warm as the dope running down my spine
But I don’t care ’bout you
And I’ve got nothing to do
Feel the warmth of the air that I breathe

Moon – a review

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

moon

Moon is one of those films you hear about in passing conversation. Someone might have mentioned it at a dinner party or at the football and you end up intrigued by it. Well this is what happened to me.

Moon is a film starring Sam Rockwell and a talking computer called GERTY voiced by Kevin Spacey. There are other actors in it, but they have about 5 minutes of air time in the film. Sam Rockwell runs the show and by god he does it so well.

Playing multiple characters with different emotions acting out on the same screen. Its amazing to see.

The story is quite simple Sam Bell played by Rockwell is a Mining Operative who is on a three year contract on a Moon mining base. He is there because the Earth gets all its energy from the Moon in the form of Helium. Sam Bell is there to make sure everything works.

Top 10 albums of 2009

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Well its been quite an interesting year for new music and also discovering new music. Here is a list of my top ten albums of the year.

The Twilight Sad - Forget the night ahead

The Twilight Sad - Forget the night ahead

1 – The Twilight Sad -Forget The Night Ahead

I found out about this band via a workmate. Quickly I fell in love with their layers of feedback and gritty vocals. The album is almost like one long journey where songs merge into each other. Led by the heady Scottish brogue of singer James Graham, these are gorgeous, epic, soaring songs with a raw, beautiful & subtle sense of tension that swells from the basement of emotion, and explodes into a raging barrage of skyward brilliance.

Key track – Floorboards under the bed

Label: FatCat Records

Release Date: September 22, 2009

The Horrors - Primary Colours

The Horrors - Primary Colours

2 – The Horrors -Primary Colours

I had heard of The Horrors before and always thought they were a bit of ‘goth’ band that were all image and no substance. I also remember lots of teeny goths standing outside the Cathouse for one of their gigs – these people annoy me!

So when I heard they had actually released a decent album, I thought I better give it a listen. I have to say I was blown away by how good it is. A mix of My Bloody Valentine, The Cure and The Stone Roses has created one of the best albums of the year. It is also full of this raw tension that grips each song by the throat. It also has the best intro to an album in years!

Key Track – Sea Within a Sea

Label: XL Recordings

Release Date: May 04, 2009
